Graduate Students

Devadyouti Das is a PhD candidate in Physics Department. He works on surface alignment of liquid crystals, microswimmer dynamics in nematics, and various other things. His recent hobby is to play with the plasma cleaner.

Beatrice Lunsford-Poe is a PhD candidate in the Physics Department. She is studying rheological properties of lyotropic liquid crystals using laser tweezers.

Sizhe Cheng is a PhD student in the Physics Department. He is creating a new 3D imaging technique to reconstruct deformation dynamics of microswimmers’ body during locomotion in high fps imaging.

Oluwafemi Isaac Akomolafe is PhD student in the Physics Department. He is working on chiral liquid crystals, defects, and colloidal particles in nematics.

Alumni

Gassan Yacteen worked on automatic optical measurement of liquid crystal director fields.  He also has a YouTube channel teaching people math and physics!

Maya Williams worked on the cargo transportation by bacteria in lyotropic liquid crystals in Fall 21.

Mykhaylo Barchuk started to work in the lab since summer 2019. He combined Ocean Optics spectrometer and a microscope to allow spectrum measurement at precise locations. He studied the flow field of Trypanosoma Brucei for his Honor Thesis. He is now working in Cambridge Computer. Enjoy the new life, Misha!

James Liu joined the lab in fall 2019. He worked on microswimmers in isotropic fluid and nematic liquid crystal. He is now a masters student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Congratulations!

Zakaria Siddiquee studied the confinement effect on microswimmers. He is not in the PhD program in Kent State University. Congrats!

Haote Li worked in the lab on liquid crystal alignment for one year as a Msc student. He is currently doing his PhD in the Chemistry Department at Yale University. Good luck, Haote!

Mingquan Li worked in the lab on lyotropic liquid crystal based active system for one semester as a undergraduate researcher in fall 2018. He graduated with a bacherlor’s degree in 2019.
